The WNBA's Connecticut Sun are being sold to the Fertitta family, owners of the NBA's Houston Rockets, for $300 million and will relocate to Texas in 2027, sources told <a href="https://x.com/alexaphilippou/status/2037646278755045612">ESPN's Alexa Philippou</a>.The $300-million sale is a record for a WNBA franchise, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7152749/2026/03/27/rockets-owners-connecticut-sun-relocate-houston-comets/?unlocked_article_code=1.WVA.WTOr.nCg0JaupA3Kb&amp;source=athletic_user_shared_gift_article_copylink&amp;smid=url-share-ta">Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic</a>.The league's board of governors will have to approve both the sale and the relocation, Vorkunov reports.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>The reported transaction marks the WNBA's return to Houston, where the Comets were one of the the league's original franchises in 1997. The Comets remain one of the most successful WNBA franchises on the court, having won the league's first four championships. They're one of only three teams to win four titles. However, the Comets couldn't sustain that success and folded in 2008.The relocation, which will reportedly take place following the upcoming season, will end the franchise's 23-year run in Uncasville, Connecticut. Although they've never won a championship, the Sun have only missed the playoffs six times since 2003 and made four WNBA Finals appearances.The Mohegan Tribe, which has owned the franchise since 2003, has attempted to sell previously. A reported deal with Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca, who would have moved the Sun to Boston, wasn't approved by the WNBA in 2025. Milwaukee Bucks owner Marc Lasry then tried to buy the team and relocate it within Connecticut to Hartford, which the league also blocked, according to Vorkunov.This would be the second time that the franchise has been relocated. It was founded as the Orlando Miracle in 1999 but spent just four seasons in central Florida before moving to Connecticut.If the pending deal is approved, it would be the sixth franchise relocation in WNBA history.
