The New York Islanders fired Patrick Roy and hired Peter DeBoer as their next head coach, the team announced Sunday.

Roy was relieved of his duties by first-year general manager Mathieu Darche after serving as head coach since January 2024. The 60-year-old had two years remaining on his contract.

DeBoer's hiring by the Islanders is not just for the remainder of this season and includes additional term, reports Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

DeBoer previously served as head coach of the Dallas Stars. He was let go by the Stars last June after leading them to three consecutive trips to the Western Conference final. He's also coached the Vegas Golden Knights, San Jose Sharks, New Jersey Devils, and Florida Panthers.

The 57-year-old has led two different teams to the Stanley Cup final and has the most playoffs wins (97) by a head coach without a Stanley Cup championship. He also owns a perfect 9-0 record in Game 7, which is the most wins in NHL coaching history.

The Islanders have lost four straight and seven of their last 10 games.
