Carolina Panthers edge rusher Nic Scourton sustained a torn ACL during the team's first day of training camp Thursday, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Cameron Wolfe.
The second-year defender will reportedly seek a second opinion. He'll undergo surgery in the coming weeks once the ACL injury is confirmed, per Rapoport.
Scourton went down during team drills, according to The Associated Press' Steve Reed. He was carted off to the training room with his hand over his face.
The Texas A&M product was projected to be a key contributor on a Panthers defense that brought in Jaelan Phillips and Devin Lloyd this offseason to join holdovers Jaycee Horn and Derrick Brown.
Head coach Dave Canales said Carolina has enough talent to go on without Scourton if the injury proves to be significant.
"We've got depth," Canales said, per Reed. "That's why we keep bringing in guys. If it comes to that (a serious injury), we have guys that we trust."
Scourton, a second-round draft pick in 2024, started eight games last season and recorded nine QB hits, seven tackles for loss, and five sacks.
