Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens removed himself from consideration for North Carolina's head coaching job, sources told CBS Sports' Matt Norlander.

The Tar Heels fired Hubert Davis on Tuesday in the wake of their Round of 32 elimination at March Madness. Stevens reportedly topped North Carolina's list of candidates, which also includes Arizona's Tommy Lloyd, Michigan's Dusty May, Iowa State's T.J. Otzelberger, and Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan.

Stevens has turned down multiple opportunities to return to the NCAA ranks since leaving Butler to coach the Celtics in 2013. Boston promoted Stevens to its front office in 2021, and he won NBA Executive of the Year along with a championship in 2024.

Davis coached North Carolina for five seasons, accumulating a 125-54 record. The Tar Heels reached the title game in his first season but never advanced past the Sweet 16 afterward. The program hasn't won a national championship since 2017.
